A note
I should probably explain what this is.
I’ve never been able to pick a lane with music. I’ve tried. Every time I sit down meaning to make one thing, it comes out sounding like four. For years I assumed that was a problem — that you were supposed to turn up with a genre, a look, and a one-line description of your sound.
Somewhere in making this album I stopped trying. I started choosing music the way I actually choose it: because of how it makes me feel, not because of what it’s supposed to say about me. A great voice and an honest story will get me every time. Whatever it ends up filed under is somebody else’s problem.
So this record goes from piano ballads to drum and bass to something not far off a sermon, and I’ve stopped apologising for it. It’s about my relationship with music across different parts of my life. The bit where you love a song and couldn’t tell you why. The bit where you’re trying to work out where you fit inside it. And the bit where you finally stop listening to what you’re supposed to.
A few things about how it was made, so you know what you’re getting. Most of the vocals were recorded in my car, because my house sounds like a house and my car sounds like a booth. I mixed and edited it myself, which mainly means I have now heard my own voice more times than anyone should have to. There are lines on here I sang forty times. There are lines I got once and never got again.
Fourteen songs made the album. A couple more will come out as singles. And there are a few I’m still fighting with — we’ll see how that goes.
Anyway. That’s me, more or less.
If any of that sounds like your relationship with music too, I’d genuinely like to know what yours is.
